Bebington High Sports College is part of the Excellence in Cites initiative, which supports our programme for Gifted & Talented students. We give this term to the student who make up the top 5 - 10% in each year group. Some students may be more able in a range of subjects and these make up the ‘gifted and talented’ register. Other students may be talented in one performance area, such as Art, PE, Dance or Music. We identify these students using a range of methods including SATs grades, CATs scores and subject teacher nominations. Once these students have been identified as being ‘Gifted or Talented’ they are regularly monitored to ensure that they are achieving their potential.
The programme provides curriculum enrichment and curriculum extension activities ranging from master classes, visits, a residential in Year 8 to competitions and inter school events.
'Gifted and Talented Students' is the term we give to the students who make up the top 5% to 10% in each year group. Some students may be more able in a range of subjects and these make up the School's 'gifted' register. Other students may be talented in one performance area, such as Art , PE , Dance or Music. We identify these students using a range of methods including SATs grades, CATs scores and subject teacher nominations.
Once a student has been identified as being 'gifted and talented', they are regularly monitored to ensure that they are achieving their potential. The programme provides curriculum enrichment and curriculum extension activities ranging from master classes, visits, a residential in Year 8 to competitions and inter-school events. In addition, embedded into department schemes of work is the idea of higher teaching skills and learning techniques to raise achievement.
This is an actively run scheme at Bebington High Sports College and a significant number of our students enjoy taking part and working hard toward achieving both Silver & Gold awards. Numerous students in all three Key Stages take advantage of this scheme. Our school’s staff are well-supported by both local and national organisations in ensuring that our students receive high quality guidance and support in securing accreditation at a range of levels. Among our partners are the Army, the Scouting movement and Wirral’s Ranger Service.
In addition, being a Specialist Sports College affords our participants the opportunity to utilise the nationally-recognised Sports Leaders Awards as a means to fulfil the requirements of the “Service” component of the Duke of Edinburgh programme. “Expeditions”, “Skills” and “Sports” undertaken have been as diverse in range as the interests and aspirations of the variety of students who have benefited from our school’s Duke of Edinburgh provision. Destinations include the Snowdonia National Park, while areas of knowledge and expertise developed have embraced photography and golf, to name but a modest number of examples. A measure of our school’s success with the scheme is the high proportion of students who progress beyond the Bronze Award - no small indication of the sense of enjoyment and achievement experienced from the outset.
