The Catwalk Extravaganza at Bebington High Sports College Which Showed That Green Really Is the New Black.
Students staged a Recycled ‘Trashion show’ of wearable art & couture fashion created out of rubbish. Students were invited to create their own outfits from materials which would otherwise be thrown away, they came up with very imaginative ideas. They had to design, make and model eco-outfits made entirely from unwanted textiles, paper and waste materials. Models showed off garments designed from recycled old clothes and household waste such as newspaper, magazines, yellow pages, crisp packets, bin bags, cd’s and old curtains. The event is part of BHSC way to promote recycling and waste reduction and aimed to change the way people look at what they buy and what they throw away.
Due to climate change it is paramount to promote the importance of recycling to the next generation, as issues of waste management will become even more prominent and furthermore it is something that everyone can get involved in
With sponsorship from the local co-operative, students have designed a clothing collection with skill and art in mind, with the theme ‘re-think rubbish’. In fashion people often say ‘what goes around, comes around’ so with this in mind, approximately 50 items of the fashion collection in the Bebington High ‘Trashion’ show were individually created from rubbish which helps the planet by reducing waste.
Fashion is a really powerful tool and the students were totally engaged with this event, they were very enthusiastic about the project which in turn generated interest in recycling in a constructive way, whilst maintaining all the glamour of fashion. Fashion trends were set when unwanted materials were transformed into stunning outfits and paraded on the catwalk by the students, showing everyone a creative way to reuse and recycle rubbish and waste materials. The students enjoyed trying and learning new techniques in an environment that was different from the usual classroom experience, the atmosphere in Fashion HQ, which was a recycled Science Lab had a real electric buzz about it.
Teachers, staff and parents donated time and goods for the fashion show and the students worked hard for months, spending hours after school in the evenings and during the holidays in the Design and Technology department making outfits from recycled materials, and putting together the fashion show.
