Bebington High Does CSI

A touch of CSI came to Bebington High Sports College as students became detectives for the day.

Fifty Year 11 students spent a day discovering forensic science. The talk was arranged for students who had achieved a merit or distinction in Science, and at provided them with an insight into the career options available when studying forensic as a subject.

Amanda Boddis and Shaun Kent of LJMU discussed crime scene investigations the technology and materials available and the science behind this, whilst being able to relate it to real life situations and murders. The talk discussed evidence found at crime scenes ranging from how bullets and fire arms are examined to the decomposition of a body including maggot infestation. Furthermore it outlined how forensic scientists use their skills to collect physical evidence, observe their surroundings and perform analysis to help catch the criminals.

The students were shown fingerprint identification works and the use of DNA analysis in interpreting crime scenes. Students were able to see a range of bullets found at crime scenes and view prosthetic bodies used to train forensic scientists at university. The talk was a chance to view how forensic science works and encourage students to study the new level 3 BTEC forensic / medical course being taught next year in sixth form.

Mrs Hall, Co-ordinator for Science stated “This was a great experience for students as it gave them an insight into how crimes are investigated and they were really enthusiastic, taking onboard all the information they were given. We are hoping to hold more events like this in the future”
