Students from each year of Bebington High Sports College recently got together with their peers from all across Wirral to read a selection of books and vote for their favourite in Wirral ‘Paperback of the Year 2011’ competition.
Run by Wirral’s Schools’ Library Service for local secondary schools, the competition is in its 16th year and this year students had the chance to actually choose the fifteen book selection. The final shortlist will be voted for by students in April and the winner will be announced in July.
The author event involved Paul Dowswell, who is a super junior historical thriller write; Keren David, a teen fiction writer and author of ‘When I Was Joe’; Leslie Wilson, a teenage historical writer and David Miller, a young adventure writer who told the students of the terrifying real life events that inspired him to write his book “Shark Island”.
Our Year 8 students were so enthralled by his stories they wanted to continue on with further books in his trilogy. Also inspired were our ‘Chicklits’ reading group, our Paperback of the Year reading group and other aspiring young authors from across the school.
