Bebington High Sport College V’s The University Academy Birkenhead (UAB)
A pulsating final was played at Parkonians RFU recently when Bebington High Sports College recently participated in the Wirral Cup.
The University Academy Birkenhead started brightly opening the scoring after 5 minutes with a try in the corner. Bebington High Sports College hit back on the 10 minute mark with a fantastic corner try scored by Alfie Tektas, a flowing move where the ball went through many hands. Lewis Moore made a valiant attempt at the but failed. A closely contested mid half period saw both sides camped in the centre but with 5 minutes remaining a fantastic break from Liam Driscoll inside Bebington’s own 22 freed Alfie Tektas to score our second try. This time Lewis Moore converted from a tight angle to make the score 12-5 to Bebington at half time.
In the second half things were again tight and both teams found it difficult to make ground. However mid way through the half University Academy scored a break away try but failed with the conversion, 12-10 Bebington.
With 5 minutes remaining University Academy took control and a break on the blind side of the scrum culminated in yet another score in the corner, however they missed the conversion. 15 – 12 to University Academy Birkenhead.
Almost immediately, Bebington High jolted into life and a spell of pressure near the try line finally paid dividends. An initial break by Michael Lavelle was continued by the immense Morgan McCready, who shrugged off several attempted tackles before freeing our ever dependable captain Ryan Hudson to dive over. Lewis Moore again converted to leave Bebington 19 -15 ahead with less than 2 minutes remaining. Bebington High held firm to achieve a thoroughly deserved win.
“Bebington High Sports College is extremely proud of their players; they have displayed tremendous character all season, and thoroughly deserve their success. It was an exciting final which was closely contested and played in the right spirit”, said Mr Moore, Teacher of PE.
The number of students playing rugby in the local community is growing each year, which is tribute to Bebington High Sports College’s outstanding school-club links. The standard and quality of rugby played was astounding and a testament to the tremendous work of the teachers and coaches of both schools who took part. A great advert for Junior Rugby.
