Bebington High Sports College are proud to announce that their Year 11 student, Lee Chamberlain, has recently won 2nd prize in the Chris Salmon Poetry Extravaganza.
Students entered a poetry contest competition in memory of Greasby teenager Chris Salmon, a pupil at Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby, who died in February 2009, aged 15 – just days after complaining of a headache. His family found he had penned dozens of poems which they found after his death and this competition was established as part of a joint initiative involving Wirral Libraries and the Chris Salmon Foundation, a charity set up in the teenager’s memory. The contest was open to all Wirral young people up to 18 years of age and separated into three different school age groups – up to and including Year six, Years seven to 11 and Years 12 and 13 – and attracted 643 entries. Poems had to have the theme of Peace and be no longer than 30 lines and 500 words.
The award evening took place at the Bromborough Civic centre, Allport Lane on 9th April, at which Lee was invited to read his poem and be presented with his prize along side other prize winners.
West Kirby Grammar School student Kim Morgan was selected as The ‘Young Wirral Laureate’ at the evening, with guests at the event being our Deputy Mayor and Levi Tafari an established author, film writer, actor & musician from Liverpool who entertained the audience by reading some of his best works.
So far the charity has raised £15,000 from a variety of events.
