Two teams from Year 7 and 8 recently took part in a chemistry festival held at John Moores University competing against a range of schools from across Merseyside, including one team who flew in from the Isle of Man!
In the morning students had to complete the Salters Challenge, in which they had to collect and analyse data in their allocated teams, whilst being assessed on their team working, health and safety plus presentation of work. Both teams worked well but sadly missed out on a prize.
In the afternoon the teams where required to work on a task called the ‘iodine clock’. The students had to work out, through trial and error, how to get two solutions to change colour at precisely 30 seconds, when mixed together. Again both teams did well and worked with confidence to achieve their results. However when monitored by the judges both teams fell slightly short of the 30 seconds deadline, despite achieving comfortable times in practice. This was an excellent day for the students who represented the school superbly.
